The red dawn almost ruined her.

Evergreen’s superstitious residents would’ve been up by now. Fear, gossip, and prayers. All in the name of a false god. All concentrated in town’s square. Too close to both her home and work buildings. She’d have to use the back entry.

At the loading dock, she smiled and waved to the night shift’s team lead, Fatigued, he only nodded in response while calling out directives of matching inventory to respective trucks. Good, no one would notice her during the morning grind.

No one could pull the alarm, not yet.

Once she went through the dock doors, she waited in the hallway for the security guard to take his break. Her patience wore thin. He flitted in and out of sleep. Should he be the scapegoat? Although she liked Lynn, she had to complete her part. Maybe the boss would focus on this pleb instead of firing Lynn.

She shook her head. Emotional ties undermined the plan.

Once the guard stretched and left the desk, she crouched and moved forward. Codes, in. Cameras, off. Recent footage, deleted. She rushed to the elevator, swiped the access card stolen from her boss, and up she went.

At Lynn’s computer, she typed in the woman’s password, inserted the encrypted USB, and got to work. She glanced at the photo on the desk. Lynn pregnant, next to her husband. If only the woman didn’t have the bad habit of keeping her computer unlocked. Maybe none of this would’ve happened. It was too easy for anyone to change the password before Lynn’s mat leave.

After everything uploaded onto the website and emails to shareholders were sent, she exhaled slowly. Now, to hide, then slip away when the distraction deployed.

Her spirit lifted and brushed away residual tension. She followed each step beyond expectations. She deserved the rewards promised.

Yama would shower his blessing for the part she played in exposing the treacherous Pak family.
